Bốn “tiểu Trái Đất” lộ diện, có thể đã 10 tỉ năm tuổi

Quanh một ngôi sao cổ đại cách Trái Đất chưa đầy 6 năm ánh sáng, các nhà khoa học đã phát hiện dấu hiệu của 4 hành tinh đá.

Sử dụng thiết bị MAROON-X trên kính viễn vọng Gemini North của Đài thiên văn quốc tế Gemini và thiết bị ESPRESSO trên kính viễn vọng Very Large của Đài thiên văn Nam Âu (ESO), các nhà khoa học Mỹ đã phát hiện 4 “tiểu Trái Đất” xung quanh sao Barnard.

Sao Barnard là một thiên thể già cỗi, ước tính đã 10 tỉ năm tuổi và là một sao lùn đỏ mờ nhạt.

Còn được gọi là Gliese 699 hoặc GJ 699, Barnard nằm trong chòm sao Xà Phu (Ophiuchus), không thể nhìn thấy bằng mắt thường dù chỉ cách Trái Đất chưa đầy 6 năm ánh sáng.

Theo nhà nghiên cứu Ritvik Basant từ Đại học Chicago (Mỹ), 4 hành tinh được phát hiện quanh Barnard đều là 4 hành tinh đá và có khối lượng chỉ khoảng 20-30% khối lượng Trái Đất.

Vì vậy, nhóm tác giả gọi chúng là các “tiểu Trái Đất”. Thường các hành tinh chỉ thua tuổi của ngôi sao mẹ một chút, nên chúng cũng là những hành tinh cực kỳ già cỗi.

Để so sánh, Trái Đất của chúng ta khoảng 4,54 tỉ tuổi, quay quanh ngôi sao mẹ tên Mặt Trời khoảng 4,6 tỉ tuổi.

Bốn hành tinh mới cũng nằm trong số các ngoại hành tinh bé nhỏ nhất mà nhân loại từng quan sát được.

Trong 4 cái, có 3 hành tinh thể hiện dấu hiệu chắc chắn, cái còn lại có chút mờ nhạt hơn. Nó không hiển thị trong dữ liệu của Gemini North mà chỉ lộ tung tích dưới “mắt thần” mạnh mẽ hơn của Very Large, theo Sci-News.

Viết trên Astrophysical Journal Letters, nhóm tác giả cho biết việc nhận diện những hành tinh đá rất bé nhỏ này là bước đột phá lớn trong quan sát thiên văn.

Bốn hành tinh này cũng là bằng chứng cho thấy tiềm năng của các kính viễn vọng hiện tại trên thế giới vẫn còn rất lớn, nhất là trong việc tìm kiếm các “bản sao” của địa cầu.
